It's Christmas and we'll keep the tradition alive...  Here is your annual dose of Southern Hemisphere Yuletide cheer to warm your hearth with - complete with Ukulele Christmas Carols on the beach!

Fresh on the tails of our promotion to time-traveling golden dragons (yes, we just like writing that) the blog spends last month exploring the only independent Polynesian nation left on this planet: The Kingdom of Tonga.

Tonga has many fascinating aspects, listed here in order of importance:

1) BACON!

http://coastguardcouple.com/2011/11/03/tonga-has-bacon/

(Have you gone a year without real bacon?  Until you do, do not mock our prioritization of this ;-)

2) Did you notice the cross on the flag?  Just in time for the birth of baby Jesus we find ourselves receiving an education in the concept of a "Christian Nation" and how very little we understand about those words.

3) Oh yeah, and they let you swim with wild baby humpback whales!

Oh yes, there is video of this little guy!

Being as this serves as our Christmas card you may feel that we should include a yearly summary of some kind.  But, you see, we have a blog for that...

As always we love to hear from you and look forward to finding out how the year has treated you.

Best wishes from our tropical Christmas!

Coast Guard Couple-ing

It's odd to think of ourselves as "veterans" but we are and in remembrance of Veterans day, we decided to answer a question from a woman considering joining up:

"My fiancé and I are contemplating joining the Coast Guard together after we get married..."

Check out our answer (and an awesome picture of Greg back in his days as a boarding officer) by clicking on "Coast Guard Couple-ing"

In October the blog explores just why Niue is Greg's most favorite island in all the South Pacific.  The 125 feet of visibility on dives, the highly poisonous sea snakes that act like friendly puppies and, oh yeah, the part where you can literally swim through the island!

"Then we swam UNDER the island"

And that was just the water, the land here is also defies the imagination.  From rainforest to some kind of oak forest to craggy shores to sandy beaches Niue really has it all...but we're just not exactly sure how all of it got here...

"How did it all GET here"

Finally, Tiffany and I have officially become time traveling Golden Dragons!

"No Flux Capacitor required"

It's a sailor thing. ;-)

Just occurred to us you all are probably gearing up for Thanksgiving back at home.  The seasons have turned and it's just getting warmer here!  (not that it actually got that cold to begin with... ;-)

The Country That Only Accepts VISA

September, wow, what happened in September? ;-)

Aside from our 8 year wedding anniversary? ;-)

http://coastguardcouple.com/2011/09/15/8-years-ago-today/

Oh yeah, that's right, we checked out what, in Greg's opinion, is the crown jewel, the best, the number one island in Polynesia: the Island-Nation of Niue.  1 island, 1300 people, lots of nature.  This place is amazing!

... And then came the part where we couldn't get any money because the bank...no wait, we mean THE ENTIRE COUNTRY, does not accept MasterCard.  At all.  Even a little bit.  Even if it's your bank card.  Even if it's your only way to access you account!

Lesson learned.

Oh and they have INTERNET!  Real, actual, oh wow it doesn't take us 10 hours to send this freaking monthly email INTERNET!!"

...Really, you don't get how big this is...

And for those of you who are reading our blog month to month and saying to yourselves "yeah, that's awesome, but I couldn't ever do the boat part." Well, this is for you: we met a fellow traveler that got to the islands the way most sane people do: by plane.  Thing is, she lived in paradise for the past several months on less than it would cost her to live at home.  If the tropics keep calling your name but the yacht thing ain't for you, then this article might really open your eyes:

The world awaits and it loves company!

We are not alone

Though we typically focus on last month's adventures, we decided to make an exception this time.  Because traveling gives you some interesting perspective on the anniversary of 9/11

What do you mean we're only halfway?!

The title pretty much says it all:

What do you mean we're only halfway?!

So July found us back on Bora Bora.  Which, if you're going to be outside the US for the 4th of July, a former WW2 US island battle fortress/Pacific paradise ain't too shabby a place to fly old glory.  They even had a party for us.  Though some American traditions did get slightly "altered" in translation as you can see in "Bora Bora 4th of July"

It's the effort that counted though.  You become very much more aware of the birthday of your nation when you're so far away from it.

And we got into a canoe race and managed to not completely embarrass ourselves in "The Tahiti-Moorea Rendezvous"!

(can't say the same about when Greg tried to blow the conch shell though...)

We finally at long last got some video of a Polynesian church choir singing.  You may not have heard but Polynesians have a reputation for jaw-droopingly good church music.  They most certainly lived up to the hype.  Check out our post "Polynesian Singing".

Here's hoping your 4th was as good as ours!
